Modern History
In the years of 1922 and 1923, after the World War I, only some of the windows in the church were replaced, the cloister fell into disrepair. World War II and the following years meant a complete absence of repairs and maintenance of the entire area.

The church on Zelená Hora became one of the most visited pilgrimage places and its grounds took part in many magnificent Baroque festivities, culminating in 1735 with massive celebrations of the presumed 500th anniversary of monastery's foundation.

Building of the Church
The construction of the church was started in an unusual way for such a large construction project - in the middle of the construction season, on August 13, 1719. However, it was apparently only preparatory work, such as measuring, digging and laying bricks for the foundations of the future building.

Location in the Landscape
Given the importance of the church and the anticipated numbers of pilgrims, it was necessary to carefully select the location where the entire complex would be built. The chosen location not only had to meet spatial requirements but also enhance the unusual architecture.

Initiation of the Construction
The construction of the pilgrimage church of St John of Nepomuk near the Cistercian monastery of Žďár nad Sázavou was realized thanks to the long-standing, close and extremely fruitful cooperation of two exceptional people. The initiative came from the abbot of the monastery, Václav Vejmluva, who was a devotee of John of Nepomuk, even before his beatification and later canonization.
